I think a better question is do you know the salvage yard. Most respectable buisnesses give you 30 days from date of purchase on most parts. Just have it ready to go in as soon as you buy it.

All junkyard parts are a gamble. Unless you have some way to test it, you're taking a risk because most junkyards won't give you a refund, only an exchange. Remember that cars in junkyards are there for a reason.

Have the shop provide the used part (get it from the junkyard) rather than you going to get it and taking it to the shop to install it. The shop may mark up the price a bit, but they also will have to replace the compressor if it is no good.

If you bring a shop a part, and tell them to put that part in your car, they will do it. If the part you provide is bad, they will charge you the labor to remove and replace it again. If you take the car to the shop and tell them to get a used compressor and install it, they will be responsible for the cost of additional labor if the junkyard part is bad.

You are also going to need to replace the accumulator and orifice tube as well if they are going to give you any type of warranty also. So there is no cheap way of fixing other then if you just roll down your windows.
