I wouldn't stop diagnosing with just a trouble code, unless the part was cheap and easy to get. Make sure that TCM is getting power and ground and all signals. particularly the throttle sensor

easy test :Find some one with the same car (car lot?). Get them to loan you the TCM

another: if TCM cover is removable, take a look inside, for burnt parts

Often if an AT has gone bad, the fluid will smell real bad - scorched. A lot like power steering fluid usually smells.

I can hook you up with a very good transmission shop Just East of Zanesville . They may be able to get from somewhere other than dealer, not sure tho.
I too thought just a senser on my 03 Caravan, trans wsa junk. They did a complete rebuild and gave me a one year 12,000 mile warranty .Was covered thru car lot where I had just purchased the van.
